Cheddington Allotments

Cheddington Parish Council Allotments

There are now over 50 tenants at the Parish Council’s allotments at the end of Church Lane opposite the Village Hall. They lovingly tend plots ranging from just 70 square yards to over 550 square yards. The tenants’ experience ranges from the absolute novice to those who have spent a lifetime growing crops. For the beginner, there is always friendly advice on hand, and a great spirit of mutual help and co-operation. Seeds, plants, produce are swapped and there are even volunteers to dig a plot if the tenant is sick or injured.

Sheds and greenhouses are not allowed on the allotments which helps to keep them looking especially neat and tidy. Local representatives from the National Garden Scheme visited the allotments in September 2009 and were so impressed with what they saw that they urged the tenants to open their allotments as part of the NGS Open Gardens Day in Cheddington. On 20th June 2010 dozens of visitors came to enjoy looking around the allotments in glorious summer weather. In addition to the crops at which to marvel, the visitors also enjoyed voting for the Best Scarecrow – with over 20 entrants.  The allotment gardens will be open again this year on Sunday 19th June.

Social events organised by the allotment holders include the annual allotment holders’ supper with a veritable feast of home-grown vegetables to be savoured, and an opportunity for the tenants to meet each other than in their gardening clothes, and with clean hands! A quiz night was held in spring last year before the long summer evenings kept the allotment holders out of doors until dusk.

A new development was the opening of six orchard plots where tenants can plant fruit trees. They are situated next to the lineside fence, and will help to bring back just a little of Cheddington’s heritage.

There is at present a waiting list for garden plots. Anyone wishing to have an allotment should contact the Allotment Warden. Annual rates for the allotment year starting on 1st October 2011 are: full plot £20; ¾ plot £16; ½ plot £12; ¼ plot £8. Tenants over 60 are charged at half price. Orchard plots are charged according to size without reduction for the over 60’s.
