Cheddington Allotments
Cheddington Parish Council Allotments
There are now over 50 tenants at the Parish Council’s allotments at the end of Church Lane opposite the Village Hall. They lovingly tend plots ranging from just 70 square yards to over 550 square yards. The tenants’ experience ranges from the absolute novice to those who have spent a lifetime growing crops. For the beginner, there is always friendly advice on hand, and a great spirit of mutual help and co-operation. Seeds, plants, produce are swapped and there are even volunteers to dig a plot if the tenant is sick or injured.
Sheds and greenhouses are not allowed on the allotments without the written consent of the Parish Council which helps to keep them looking especially neat and tidy. Local representatives from the National Garden Scheme visited the allotments in September and were so impressed with what they saw that they urged the tenants to apply to open their allotments to the public next summer. With the support of the Parish Council, application has now been made. It is hoped the allotments will be open on the same day as the Cheddington Open Gardens.
The annual allotment holders’ supper will be held in the Methodist Chapel Room on Saturday 21st November 2009 at 7:00pm for 7:30. A veritable feast of home-grown vegetables is planned for the tenants to enjoy and for them to have the opportunity to meet each other than in their gardening clothes, and with clean hands!
There is presently no waiting list for plots, and there are two small, new plots available to rent.
Annual rates for 2009/10 are: full plot £19; ¾ plot £15; ½ plot £11; ¼ plot £7. Tenants over 60 are charged at half price. Out of parish tenants pay £30pa for a full plot. Rents are due to increase on 1st October 2010 to £20; £16; £12 & £8 respectively. Tenancy Conditions can be viewed by clicking on the PDF file at the right of this screen.
