Cheddington Parish Council Allotments

Here we are again, nearly at the end of the growing season on our Allotments.  It has been a busy year with a plentiful harvest of fruit and vegetables plus an array of lovely flowers to attract the bees.  Hopefully some of our allotmenters will present their crops for judging at the Cheddington Horticulture show on Saturday 24th September at St. Giles Church.

If you want to come down and meet us, the Parish Council’s allotments are at the end of Church Lane adjacent to the Village Hall.  There are nearly 60 allotment growers with experience ranging from the absolute beginner to those who have spent a lifetime growing crops.  Just speak to any of them and they will happily chat to you about their allotments and how we go about our allotmenting in our individual ways.

For the beginner and more experienced fruit and veg. grower, friendly advice is available plus a good supply of banter.  We all have our successes and failures on the allotment irrespective of our experience.  Seeds, plants and produce are swapped during the season with a mutual interest in producing crops for ourselves despite the challenges of weather, insect pests, rabbits, availability of time and general life events.

We enjoy a plentiful supply of water on our allotments.  Lugging cans of water in the lovely summer evenings seems to be a pleasurable activity for our allotmenters judging by the number of them up the allotments in the evenings as they care and nurture their crops over the season -  there really is no need for them to visit the gym to keep fit!  Plenty of fresh air, the pleasure of growing your own fruit, vegetables and flowers in good soil and with good company is something for you to look forward to for Summer 2017.

We have continued to open our allotments as part of the NGS Open Gardens Day in Cheddington.  Last June hundreds of visitors enjoyed looking around the allotments as well as admiring the other village open gardens.  In addition to looking at a variety of different ways of allotmenting, visitors also enjoyed informally judging of the Best Scarecrow competition. Plants, fruits, vegetables and preserves were available to buy to help raise further funds for the Cheddington NGS chosen charities.  Allotment holder, Linda Smith has organised this event for several years.

In addition to the allotments there are six orchard plots next to the lineside fence where tenants have planted fruit trees.

Sheds and greenhouses are not allowed on the allotments without the written consent of the Parish Council which helps to keep our allotments neat and tidy.

As of October 2016 there are a few vacant ¼ plots to rent on an individual basis or with a friend.  Buddy allotmenting is proving to be very popular as it helps to share the work and provide the pleasure of enjoying the crops with a friend.  Only quarter plots are allocated at first to enable you to get used to allotmenting.  Further quarters will be available once your first plot is established.

Annual rates for the allotment year starting on 1st October 2016 will be:
Full plot - £25; ¾ plot - £20; ½ plot £15; ¼ plot - £11;
out of parish - £35.

Tenants over 60 are charged at half price.
Orchard plots are charged according to size without reduction for the over 60’s. Tenancy Conditions can be viewed by clicking on the PDF file at the right of this screen.
